Ask the Expert

Mygazines

Dear Expert:

What is your take on Mygazines? They have made a huge splash recently, but what exactly is their deal?

Jake

Dear Jake,
What is their deal? Since its launch in July this free “digital” magazine site has created a lot of talk in the digital publishing space by offering low quality scans of print magazines without publisher approval. Recently, the MPA and several publishers stated they are taking legal action against the site. However, the juiciest and most interesting buzz lately was a posting on the Magtastic Blog. Mygazines representative “John Smith” of Anguilla (where the company is located by way of a Romanian phone number) detailed that in the future state of the site, which cannot yet be revealed, all will be legal and publishers will somehow be made into partners. Further confusing the situation was the assertion that the site was no different than all the “offices in the world” who buy magazines for people in their waiting rooms to read. Huh? Mygazines has created some excellent summer scandal for the Digital Publishing Industry, but the bottom line is that they are using content from publishers without approval and they should expect to face legal action for it. Stay tuned to the Industry Resource Center for updates on the Mygazines.com story – including, hopefully, whether John Smith actually exists, and if he does indeed reside in Anguilla!

Catalog Publishing and Distribution Services

Dear Expert:

Now a day, PDF version is replacing the printed catalog. However, we feel Zinio version is a better way to publish our catalog. It seems to me, Zinio is targeting digital magazine publishing and it does not provide service for small companies to publish and distribute the catalogs. This is a neglected market segment. Are you planning to do something about it?

Paul

Dear Paul,

Zinio has focused on the consumer magazine segment, but we’ve done a lot of work with publishers of in house newsletters, textbooks, music CD content and more. Most of it just isn’t visible from our magazine site. One of our sales directors would be happy to speak with you to understand your needs and see if there is a Zinio solution that would be right for you. Please contact us at 1-888-946-4666.

Benefits of Advertising in Digital Magazines

Dear Expert:

My ad sales team is asking me what they should say to advertisers about the benefits of advertising in a digital version of the magazine. Is it just as good?

Signed,

Selling ads 24/7

Dear Selling Ads,

That is a question we get asked all the time. Not only do we think digital versions of ads are just as good as being in the print magazine, we think they are better. Now, these advertisers can make ads that we can report interest on, and also allow people to interact with. This means that a reader who sees an Estee Lauder product they love can click on it, in the digital magazine and buy right from the site. How cool is that! If you want the top ten tips in selling digital ads, please contact us and let us know.
